Moodymann is the brainchild of legendary Detroit techno and deep house guru and CEO of Mahogani Music, Kenny Dixon Jnr
He began his career in the emerging early 1990s Detroit hip-hop scene, creating drum beats and producing tracks for local talents, such as K-Stone. Dixon spent much of the 90s bouncing around Detroit, working in record stores with techno icon Blake Baxter.
It’s his association with Baxter that transformed Moodymann’s sound, as he developed from hip-hop, into the techno scene and by the mid-90s, he was pioneering a unique distinctive house sound. The LA-born veteran has gone on to release thirteen studio albums across a thirty year career and even appear as himself in the popular video game, Grand Theft Auto in December 2020, as a resident DJ in the ‘in-game’ club, the Music Locker. In 2021, Moodymann, Theo Parrish, Rick Wilhite and Marcellus Pittman released a retrospective compilation of tracks they produced under their collaborative alias, 3 Chairs. The 35-track collection features a number of titles that were only previously available on vinyl.
