Penguin Cafe are a chamber jazz and folk decet from London, England, founded by Arthur Jeffes in 2009.
The band are meant as a continuation of Arthur’s father, Simon Jeffes’, 1970s avant-pop band The Penguin Cafe Orchestra. The band’s original formation served to band together a disparate but immensely talented group of musicians to perform material written and recorded by Simon Jeffes, 10 years after his passing in 1997.
Arthur inherited his father’s talent for composition and began constructing a contemporary and distinctive sound to apply to the inspiration he had been brought up with as a child. It wasn’t long before the band bled his father’s essence into a unique and powerful new project, and four critically acclaimed albums, A Matter of Life.. (2011), The Red Book (2014), The Imperfect Sea (2017) and Handfuls of Night (2019).
The band have also had a string of successful tours and live dates, perhaps none more special than a performance of Penguin Cafe Orchestra’s seminal record, Union Cafe, at Chapel Union in 2017. In 2018, the band performed in Paris, Berlin and notably in London during an event to support Greenpeace at EartH in Hackney. The band have toured extensively in Europe and the UK during 2019 – 2020, including sold out shows at Southbank’s Queen Elizabeth’s Hall and London’s Barbican Hall.
